IPL 2020, Match 36, Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab - Kings XI Punjab won the second Super Over
Sunday, Oct 18, 2020, Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai
Having opted to bat first, Mumbai found themselves in deep trouble as they lost three quick wickets inside the powerplay. Opener Quinton de Kock (53 off 43) and Krunal Pandya (34 off 30) at No. 5 revived the scorecard with a 58-run stand for the fourth wicket. All-rounders Kieron Pollard (34* off 12) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (24* off 12) played two unbeaten cameos in the end that helped Mumbai get to 176/6 in 20 overs.

Among Kings XI Punjab bowlers, Mohammad Shami and Arshdeep Singh bagged two wickets each while Chris Jordan and Ravi Bishnoi accounted for a wicket each. Glenn Maxwell, though did not pick up a wicket, bowled economically conceding 24 runs from his 4 overs. During the chase, it was kind of same story from KXIP as was the case in the recent past.
Captain KL Rahul (77 off 51) held one end tight scoring a superb half-century while other batters lost their wicket at regular intervals! Chris Gayle (24 off 21) and Nicholas Pooran (24 off 12) scored twenties each in the middle overs while Deepak Hooda (23* off 16) and Chris Jordan (13 off 8) in the final over played their hearts out, to almost take Punjab to a comfortable victory. But KXIP managed to score exactly the same as MI at the end of 20 overs pushing the game into a Super Over!
However, with some brilliant display of bowling Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab had to play two Super Overs not just one!
First Super Over:
KXIP batsmen: KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, Deepak Hooda
MI Bowler: Jasprit Bumrah
MI Batsmen: Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Kieron Pollard
KXIP Bowler: Mohammad Shami
There was a tight competition between the two bowlers but not the batsmen in this first Super Over of the match! Bumrah and Shami nailed Yorker after Yorker and that resulted in the first Super Over getting tied! KXIP lost both Rahul and Pooran scoring just 5 runs. In reply, Rohit and De Kock struggled to get a boundary and only scored exactly 5 runs in the end.
For those who are unaware: If there happens to be subsequent Super-Overs after the first one, the bowler and the batsmen (if dismissed) aren't allowed to take part in the consecutive Super Over. They are allowed once again if there is an alternate Super-Over.
Second Super Over:
MI Batsmen: Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav
KXIP Bowler: Chris Jordan
KXIP Batsmen: Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal
MI Bowler: Trent Boult
The second Super Over was more of batsmen power hitting than bowlers nailing Yorkers! MI scored 11 runs courtesy a boundary off the third delivery from Pollard. And a stunning save on the boundary rope from Mayank Agarwal helped Punjab restrict Mumbai to just 11 runs. Gayle started the chase with a six and a boundary from Mayank in the third ball meant that Punjab needed only 1 run from the last three deliveries! Mayank followed it up with successive boundary in the fourth delivery as KXIP win this game!
Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul has been adjudged as the 'Player of the Match' for his crucial half-century with the bat in the run-chase.
Brief Scores: Kings XI Punjab - 176/6 in 20 overs (KL Rahul - 77, Nicholas Pooran - 24, Jasprit Bumrah - 3/24, Rahul Chahar - 2/33) defeated Mumbai Indians - 176/6 in 20 overs (Quinton de Kock - 53, Kieron Pollard - 34*, Mohammad Shami - 2/30, Arshdeep Singh - 2/35) in the Second Super Over
