IPL 2020, Match 38, Kings XI Punjab vs Delhi Capitals - Kings XI Punjab won by 5 wickets
Tuesday, Oct 20, 2020, Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai
At the halfway stage of the IPL 2020 season, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) were sitting very dull at the bottom of the table with just 2 points (1 victory in 7 games). However, the second half seems to have great news for KXIP as they already registered three victories in three games! They defeated top 3 positioned teams - DC (No.1), MI (No.2) and RCB (No. 3) - to bag three consecutive victories! In this game against Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab held their nerve and won the game in the 19th over itself, unlike their previous two victories which went all the way down to the last ball!
Having opted to bat first, Delhi lost wickets at regular intervals! However, Shikhar Dhawan held one end tight with his second consecutive century in the tournament - 106* off 61 deliveries! The next best score in Delhi's line-up is 14 each by Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant! Coincidentally, Dhawan got to both his hundreds - first hundred (vs CSK) - facing same number of deliveries - 57!
Dhawan scored an unbeaten 106* off 61 deliveries while rest of the line-up scored only 54 runs off 59 deliveries. That's how pathetic the support for Dhawan in this innings! Overall, Delhi Capitals finished with a par total of 164/5 in 20 overs.
Kings XI Punjab came out with a positive mindset for the chase. Though they lost their in-form openers - KL Rahul (15 off 11) and Mayank Agarwal (5 off 9) - cheaply, Chris Gayle (29 off 13), Nicholas Pooran (53 off 28) and Glenn Maxwell (32 off 24) scored quick runs to take Punjab to a much needed 5-wicket victory with a over left in their innings! Delhi pacer Kagiso Rabada picked up two wickets while Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin bagged a wicket each.
Even though Delhi ended up on the losing side in this game, their opener Shikhar Dhawan bagged the 'Player of the Match' for his second consecutive century. Also, Dhawan with this innings became only player in the IPL tournament so far to score back to back hundreds in the history of IPL.
Brief Scores: Kings XI Punjab - 167/5 in 19 overs (Nicholas Pooran - 53, Glenn Maxwell - 32, Kagiso Rabada - 2/27, Ravichandran Ashwin - 1/27) defeated Delhi Capitals - 164/5 in 20 overs (Shikhar Dhawan - 106*, Mohammad Shami - 2/28, James Neesham - 1/17) by a margin of 5 wickets
