Chennai Super Kings slumped to yet another defeat in the ongoing IPL 2020 season. Chennai who were already facing criticism for benching youngsters and last year Purple Cap holder Imran Tahir, made three changes going into this game. Imran Tahir, Ruturaj Gaikwad and N Jagadeesan came into the side replacing Shane Watson, Kedar Jadhav and Piyush Chawla! However, none of these changes worked at all for Super Kings! On the other hand, Saurabh Tiwary replaced injured Rohit Sharma in this game. Kieron Pollard was entrusted with Mumbai’s stand-in captaincy responsibilities.
After being sent into bat first, Chennai lost their first wicket without scoring a single run on the board. And their scorecard reading 3/3 in the second over itself turn things bad to ugly for them in no time. As a result, Mahendra Singh Dhoni had to come out to bat in the second over of their innings - first such instance in Dhoni’s IPL career! Faf and Jadeja too lost their wickets in a hurry looking to up the momentum. CSK were reduced to 24/5 inside the powerplay making this the first instance of CSK losing five wickets inside powerplay in IPL!
Dhoni then departed in the 7th over playing a big heave off Rahul Chahar’s bowling just after hitting the bowler for a straight six the previous delivery. Score was 30/6 when Dhoni departed. During all this drama, Sam Curran played a good knock with the bat scoring his half-century and taking CSK to a respectable 114/9 in 20 overs! Mumbai pacer Trent Boult was the wrecker-in-chief as he bagged 3 wickets inside powerplay and finished with 4/18 in his 4 overs.
During the chase, Mumbai did not put a foot wrong as they chased down the target without losing a single wicket! Quinton de Kock (46* off 37) and Ishan Kishan (68* off 37) put together an unbeaten 116*-run stand for the opening wicket to take Mumbai to a comfortable 10-wicket victory! Mumbai pacer Trent Boult bagged the 'Player of the Match' award for his explosive bowling spell upfront in the powerplay.
For the record, the three new incomers for CSK did not impress at all with their performances! Ruturaj Gaikwad bagged a 5-ball Duck while N Jagadeesan departed for a first-ball Duck! Imran Tahir conceded 22 runs from his 3 overs without picking up any wicket.
Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians - 116/0 in 12.2 overs (Ishan Kishan - 68*, Quinton de Kock - 46*) defeated Chennai Super Kings - 114/9 in 20 overs (Sam Curran - 52, Mahendra Singh Dhoni - 16, Trent Boult - 4/18, Rahul Chahar - 2/22) by a margin of 10 wickets
