Home team New Zealand under the leadership of Kane Williamson thrashed Jason Holder-led West Indies by an innings margin in the first Test match to take an early lead in the 2-match Test series. It was the captain cool Kane with the bat who starred for the hosts while Tim Southee and Neil Wagner excelled with the ball for kiwis with a four-wicket haul each.

After being sent into bat first, New Zealand batted West Indies completely out of the game! After an early first wicket, opener Tom Latham and captain Kane Williamson added 154 runs for the second wicket. Once Latham (86 runs with 12 fours) departed, captain shouldered the responsibility taking them to a 500+ total. In the process, he scored 251 runs which included 34 fours and 2 sixes.
New Zealand declared their first innings with 519/7 on the board just after their bowler Kyle Jamieson got to his maiden unbeaten half-century. Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel were the pick of Windies bowlers with a three-wicket haul each. In reply, West Indies were bowled out for just 138 runs in their first innings. Opener John Campbell was their top scorer in the first innings with 26 runs!
Having secured a 381-run lead in the first innings, New Zealand have enforced the follow-on. This time Windies managed to get past their first innings total but failed to escape innings defeat! During the second innings, Jermaine Blackwood (104 runs with 11 fours and 2 sixes) and Alzarri Joseph (86 runs with 9 fours and 3 sixes) added 155 runs for the seventh wicket which helped Windies to decrease the defeat margin!
In the end, New Zealand bowled out Windies for 247 in their second innings to register a victory by a margin of an innings and 134 runs. Kane Williamson bagged the 'Player of the Match' award for his double century that helped hosts to score big in the Test match! With this victory, NZ had taken an unassailable lead of 1-0 in the 2-match Test series. The second and final Test match of the series will be played at the Basin Reserve in Wellington beginning from December 11.
