Williamson pip Smith, Kohli to take No. 1 Ranking

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson became the No. 1 batsman in the ICC Test Player Rankings for Batsmen after the recent update of the rankings post completion of the Boxing Day Test matches. He leapfrogged Steven Smith and Virat Kohli to go to the top of the ICC Test Batsmen Rankings. Prior to this, Williamson held the No. 1 position in Test Batsmen Rankings in December 2015.

Before the Boxing Day Test, Smith was at the first position with Kohli and Williamson at second and third positions respectively. In the Boxing Day Test, Williamson scored a century against Pakistan at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui while Smith scored just 8 runs against India including a Duck at MCG and Kohli did not feature in the MCG Test as he returned to India on paternity leave.

After the updated rankings, Williamson moved to the top of the table with 890 rating points while Kohli retained his second place with 879 points. With just a single digit score in the Test match, Smith got dropped to third position with 877 points.

Meanwhile, India’s stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane in the Boxing Day Test match scored a century and with it he gained five places and is currently at sixth position in the Rankings. Cheteshwar Pujara who scored just 20 runs (17 & 3) lost two positions and is currently stationed at 10th position in the list.
