New Zealand register innings victory in the second Pakistan Test

A thriller in the first match which Pakistan managed to take until the final five overs on Day 5 at the Bay Oval but they failed to stand up as a team in the second Test in Christchurch! Hosts New Zealand won both the Tests in this 2-match series to clinch the trophy by a 2-0 margin. Let us relive the second Test match.

Having opted to bowled first, New Zealand bowlers did exceptionally well to bowl out Pakistan for a par score of 297 on Day 1. Kyle Jamieson led the bowling unit as he bagged a five-for in this innings. Pakistan opener Azhar Ali (93 runs) and captain Mohammad Rizwan (61) scored half-centuries each. Trent Boult and Tim Southee accounted for 2 wickets each while Matt Henry bagged a wicket.

What followed next in the Test match was a complete nightmare for the visitors! Three NZ batters scored a century with four of the Pakistan bowlers conceding 100+ runs as home team declared their first innings with a mammoth 659/6 on the board. Kiwis captain Kane Williamson scored his fourth double century (238 runs, 28 fours) while Henry Nicholls (157 runs, 18 fours, 1 six) scored his 7th Test century. On the other hand, Daryl Mitchell (102* off 112, 8 fours, 2 sixes) registered his maiden century in this format of the game.

With plenty of runs scored, Pakistan bowlers had to face the heat. As many as four bowlers conceded over 100 runs in this innings. This was the 13th instance where four Pakistan bowlers conceded 100+ runs in a single Test innings. Mohammad Abbas conceded 98 runs, just 2 runs shy of an unwanted milestone! Had Abbas conceded those 2 runs, this would be first instance for Pakistan where five bowlers conceding 100+ runs in a Test innings.

Having taken a lead of 362 runs in the first innings, their bowlers did put lot of pressure on Pakistani batters in their second innings. This time Pakistan surrendered too easily with Azhar Ali (37) and Zafar Gohar (37) being their highest run scorers. Pakistan, in the end, were bowled out for just 186 runs conceding a victory by a margin of an innings and 176 runs.

Kyle Jamieson bagged a six-for in the second innings taking his tally to 11 wickets in this Test match. This is his first 10-for figures and he is just 6 Tests old! Deservingly, Jamieson bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award while Kane Williamson who scored a century in the first Test and a double in the second Test bagged the ‘Player of the Series’ award.
