New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is set to miss the upcoming 3-match ODI series against Bangladesh at home owing to an elbow injury. According to New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Williamson has a tear in his left elbow and had been experiencing pain and irritation in the second-half of NZ summer.
“Kane’s been managing the elbow injury to varying degrees this summer and unfortunately it hasn’t improved. He obviously has a high volume of training and playing across the three formats, which has inhibited his ability to recover,” said Dayle Shackel, NZC Medical Manager.
“We believe he now needs a period of rest and rehabilitation to get the injury right. Time-frames can vary but we’re hopeful that, after an initial rest, he should be able to begin rehabilitation next week,” added Shackel.
New Zealand are yet to name their ODI squad for the Bangladesh series and Williamson is the only big name missing at this moment from the home side. As per NZC, they will announce the squad on Thursday (Mar 11). Williamson led NZ in the recently completed 5-match T20I series at home against Australia and had scored 82 runs with a half-century.
New Zealand are scheduled to play a 3-match T20I series starting from Mar 28. At this juncture, it is unsure if Willamson will take part in the Bangladesh T20I series or not. IPL 2021 will kick start on April 09 and this injury brings an uncertainity over his participation for Sun Risers Hyderabad.
