Shanaka cleared to travel to West Indies for ODIs

A golden opportunity wasted! Dasun Shanaka was earlier named in the limited-overs squad for the West Indies. To top the fun, he was also named as the captain of their T20I side in the West Indies tour. However, due to visa-related issues, he had to stay back in Sri Lanka to get the issues sorted. In his place, veteran Angelo Mathews was named as the stand-in captain for the T20I side.

With the latest development, Shanka is now all set to travel to West Indies on Sunday (Mar 07) and can only join the national side for the ODI series. This implies he missed the opportunity to miss the lead his country on an overseas tour! Moreover, he will also be required to complete mandatory quarantine after reaching the Caribbean. This makes his participation in the ODI series against West Indies uncertain!

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that Dasun Shanaka will travel to West Indies on Sunday, 07th March 2021. He will travel via France and is expected to join the National Team during the ODI segment of the tour. Shanaka did not travel with the team due to a visa issue he confronted, pursuant to the loss of his previous passport, which had a valid visa for the USA stamped on it,” stated Sri Lanka Cricket in their media release.

At this juncture, West Indies are currently leading the 3-match T20I series by 1-0. Captain Kieron Pollard had hit six sixes in an over to trump Akila Dananjaya’s hat-trick to take his side to a comfortable 4-wicket victory in the first T20I. The second and third T20Is will be played on Mar 05 & Mar 07 respectively. The 3-match ODI series will be played from March 10.
