Chahar's spirited bowling helps MI thump KKR

Mumbai Indians (MI) made a stunning comeback towards the end of the match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Tuesday (Apr 13) to register their first victory of the IPL 2021 season. After bowling out for a paltry score of 152 runs, their bowlers helped them restrict KKR to just 142 runs winning the match by a margin of 10 runs. Wrist-spinner Rahul Chahar was the pick of the bowlers with a 4-wicket haul in this morale-boosting victory.

Mumbai opener Quinton de Kock who was observing mandatory isolation during the first game has been picked for this match. Though he failed with the bat, the other opener Rohit Sharma (43 off 32) and Suryakumar Yadav (56 off 36) provided them a good start with a 76-run partnership for the 2nd wicket. With little contributions from others, Mumbai Indians managed to end their innings with 152 runs on the board in 20 overs. Hardik Pandya (15 off 17) and Krunal Pandya (15 off 9) are the only others in the MI line-up to put up a double-digit score in this match!

It was a disciplined performance from KKR bowlers in this innings. On a slow pitch, Andre Russell (2-0-15-5) was the biggest benefiter on this pitch who bagged a five-wicket haul. These are only the 2nd 5-wicket haul figures against MI in the history of IPL while these are also the best bowling figures for any KKR bowler in the history of the franchise. Pat Cummins was also good with the ball conceding just 24 runs from his 4 overs while picking up 2 wickets. Varun Chakravarthy, Shakib and Prasidh Krishna accounted for a wicket each.

During the chase, the KKR openers – Nitish Rana (57 off 47) and Shubman Gill (33 off 24) – added 72 runs for the first wicket. However, Knight Riders fell like nine pins once this stand is separated with the wicket of Gill in the 9th over.  Barring both the openers, none of the KKR batsmen got to double digits. And that helped MI make a strong comeback. Eventually, KKR managed to get to just 142/7 conceding a 10-run victory for the defending champions.

Rahul Chahar was the pick of MI bowlers with 4 wickets in his 4 overs. He dismissed all the top 4 batsmen of KKR in this match. This performance also helped him bag the Player of the Match award in this 10-run victory. Trent Boult with 2 wickets and Krunal Pandya with a wicket were the other wicket-takers for MI in this match.
