Delhi Capitals led by their spinners convincingly defeated defending Champions Mumbai Indians in Chennai to register their third victory of the season. The fact that Mumbai already played 3 games at this venue while Delhi were playing their first match in Chennai made this victory much more memorable for the Rishabh Pant & Co.
Mumbai Indians disappointed themselves with the bat after electing to bat first. Their captain Rohit Sharma (44 off 30) had a great outing with the bat while his departure in the 9th over meant that MI had to see a little implosion during the middle overs. From 67/1 in 6.5 overs, Mumbai Indians slipped to 84/6 in 11.5 overs. If not for the 39-run partnership between Ishan Kishan (26 off 28) and Jayant Yadav (23 off 22) for the 7th wicket, Mumbai’s scorecard would have looked even worse. Only 4 of their batsmen got to double digits as MI finished with just 137/9 in 20 overs.
Amit Mishra playing his 2nd game this season bagged 4 wickets in his 4 overs. It was his spell that broke the back of Mumbai’s batting. He dismissed both Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya in the space of 3 deliveries and that was the moment Delhi took the control of the first innings! Avesh Khan with 2 wickets and Marcus Stoinis, Kagiso Rabada and Lalit Yadav with a wicket each are the other wicket-takers in the Delhi line-up.
Delhi made a cautious start to their chase even though they lost Prithvi Shaw cheaply. The 53-run stand for the second wicket between Shikhar Dhawan and Steven Smith (33 off 29) helped them form a good base in this chase on a very tricky surface. Once Smith departed, Dhawan continued on his merry way scoring 45 runs off 42 deliveries with 5 fours and a six. Though Dhawan himself failed to take them over the line, his innings boosted their chances in this tricky chase. Eventually, Delhi chased down the target with 6 wickets in hand and 5 balls to spare in their innings.
Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Rahul Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah bagged a wicket each in this innings. For the record, Delhi Capitals lost all their five previous games before tonight. This victory will give them a lot of confidence after Mumbai’s recent domination over them in the recent past! With this victory, Delhi climbed up to 2nd place in the points table while Mumbai retained the 4th position.
