Chennai Super Kings (CSK) comfortably defeated Sun Risers Hyderabad (SRH) in their first game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi in the IPL 2021. SRH, in all their first five matches, chased a target and was only successful on single occasion so far this season. However, they opted to bat first against CSK in this encounter but that didn’t still reverse their fortune in the ongoing 14th edition of Indian Premier League.
Having opted to bat first, SRH lost their opener Jonny Bairstow cheaply for just 7 runs. David Warner (57 off 55) and Manish Pandey (61 off 46) scored half-centuries to get them to a competitive total. Even though Warner got to his half-century, his knock was full of frustration as he failed to put bat on to the ball on most occasions. If not for Kane Williamson’s (26* off 10) little cameo in the end, SRH total would have been much worse. Courtesy of these knocks, SRH finished with 171/3 in 20 overs.
Among CSK bowlers, Lungi Ngidi bagged two wickets while Sam Curran accounted for a sole wicket. Even though SRH got to a competitive total by the end of their innings, the total had hardly sent down any shivers across the CSK camp! Both CSK openers scored their half-centuries and they were, at one stage, looking to chase down the target without losing any wicket. However, the mammoth 129-run stand was broken by Rashid Khan in the 13th over with the wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad (75 off 44).
The other CSK opener Faf du Plessis (56 off 38) who scored his 3rd half-century of the series is now the current holder of Orange Cap in the IPL 2021 season. Moeen Ali (15 off 8) was the other wicket to fall in CSK’s innings while Suresh Raina (17* off 15) and Ravindra Jadeja (7* off 6) remained unbeaten to take them home with 7 wickets in hand and 1.3 overs to spare in their innings. SRH spinner Rashid Khan bagged all the 3 wickets to fall in CSK’s innings.
Chennai Super Kings’ opener Ruturaj Gaikwad has been adjudged as the Player of the Match for his superb half-century in this 7-wicket victory. CSK moved to the top of the table with 5 wins in 6 games while Sun Risers Hyderabad remained at the bottom of the points table with just a victory in 6 games.
