RCB defeat MI in Chennai in a last-ball finish

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by a margin of 2 wickets in the tournament opener. With this defeat, Mumbai Indians lost their ninth tournament opener in a row in the IPL tournament.

After being sent into bat first, Mumbai Indians had a slow and steady start scoring 41 runs for the first wicket. A 70-run partnership between Chris Lynn (49 off 35) and Suryakumar Yadav (31 off 23) helped them get past the 100-run mark. With power hitters to come, MI were eyeing for a massive total on the board. However, RCB bowlers had other ideas! It was the 13th over bowled by Washington Sundar that put breaks on Mumbai’s scoring rate. Sundar dismissed Lynn on 49 in that over.

With regular wickets from there on, Mumbai found themselves in trouble. The highlight of this innings was the 4-wicket over (20th over) bowled by Harshal Patel. He dismissed Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard in the first two deliveries before cleaning up Marco Jansen in the 4th delivery of the over to complete his 5-wicket haul, becoming the only bowler so far to pick up a 5-for against MI in the history of the IPL tournament. The 4th wicket of the over was a run-out off the final delivery. MI finished with 159/9 in 20 overs.

Chasing a par target, RCB surprised everyone by opening their batting with Washington Sundar. The move clearly backfired. He was dropped on 0 by Rohit but couldn’t make the most of that chance! He was eventually dismissed on 10 off 16 deliveries. Virat Kohli (33 off 29) and Glenn Maxwell (39 off 28) contributed during the middle overs but their departure brought back Mumbai Indians into the game.

Marco Jansen’s twin strikes in the 15th over and tight bowling from Jasprit Bumrah did not let RCB score freely bringing the equation down to 34 runs from the last 18 deliveries. However, AB de Villiers (48 off 27) took the matters into his own hands during the final 3 overs guiding RCB to a comfortable victory in the end. With this victory, RCB had put an end to their streak of losing three consecutive tournament openers.
