Joe Root becomes no. 1 Test batter after 6 years!

England captain Joe Root has currently positioned himself at the top of the ICC Rankings for Batters with 916 rating points. In the latest update released by ICC on Wednesday (Sept 01), he surpassed Kane Williamson (901) to get to the top of the table! This has been a massive achievement for Root who was ranked no. 11 at the start of the year 2021!

Root scored runs with the bat everywhere he played this year. He has double centuries in Sri Lanka and India. On a roll at the moment with three centuries in as many Test matches against India in the ongoing 5-match Test series. He is currently in the form of his life and also strengthened his credentials in the 'fab four' category!

As per the latest update, Root currently has 916 rating points which are one point less than his career-best of 917 rating points which he achieved in the year 2015. Considering his current form with the bat, Root is set to scale new heights in the rankings by the end of the ongoing India Test series. On the other hand, Root is the only England batter to be in the top 10 and that explains how much is their batting unit struggling to score runs in Tests over the past 2 years!

In an interesting turnaround of events, Virat Kohli sees himself down the road with probably the worst form of his career. He dropped down to the 6th position with 766 rating points. Indian opener Rohit Sharma with 773 points is the top-ranked Indian batter at the no. 5 position.

Joe Root is the leading run-scorer in the ongoing 5-match Test series with 507 runs in 5 innings. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma are at the second and third positions respectively with 252 and 230 runs respectively in 6 innings each!
