England announced their playing XI for the fourth Ashes Test match which is to be played at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) starting from Wednesday (Jan 05). Their highest wicket-taker in this Ashes Ollie Robinson with 9 wickets has been ruled out of the SCG Test with a shoulder niggle.
Stuart Broad has been added to the playing XI in place of injured Robinson. This remains the only change to England's XI that has featured at the MCG at the end of last year! On the other hand, Chris Woakes is yet to completely recover from the shoulder niggle that kept him out of the Boxing Day Test match at the MCG.
"We felt like it was too much of a risk to go in with a couple of lads [Ollie Robinson, Chris Woakes] who are carrying niggles. So, therefore, it was right to bring Stuart Broad back in," said Graham Thorpe, England's assistant coach.
England already lost the Ashes series currently playing in Down Under by 3-0 and Stuart Broad was only part of one of those Test matches! Going into such a prestigious series, England did not give ample opportunities for Broad and James Anderson and that did really hampered their chances on this tour! The visitors would be hoping for a better outing with the ball at SCG with Anderson, Broad, Wood, Jack Leach as their bowling unit!
As a matter of fact, England continuously tinkered their bowling line-up for the first 3 matches of this series while it was their batting unit at fault for not making runs in this series loss! Australia are currently leading the 5-match Ashes series by 3-0 with 2 matches to go!
England XI for SCG Test: Haseeb Hameed, Zak Crawley, Dawid Malan, Joe Root (c), Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Mark Wood, Jack Leach, Stuart Broad, James Anderson
