After being sent into bat first, India scored 306 on the board losing 7 wickets in 50 overs. It was a dream batting performance for the Indian team led by the stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan. All their top 3 scored half-centuries as India racked up a 300+ total on the board. Shikhar Dhawan (72 off 77) and Shubman Gill (50 off 65) added 124 runs for the first wicket while Shreyas Iyer (80 off 76) and Sanju Samson (36 off 38) stitched a 94-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Lockie Ferguson (3-59) and Tim Southee (3-73) were the stars of New Zealand's bowling unit with 3 wickets each. Even though Ferguson conceded heavily in his first few overs, he managed to drag his economy back towards the end of India's innings.
New Zealand, chasing 307 runs to win, managed to score 309 losing 3 wickets in 47.1 overs. In a big run chase, the home team lost their first 3 wickets for just 88 runs and then the mammoth 4-wicket partnership happened! Tom Latham (145* off 104) and Kane Williamson (94* off 98) shared an unbeaten 221*-run stand for the fourth wicket to take them home with 7 wickets in hand.
This is Latham's 7th century and his highest score in this format while Williamson registered his 8th score in the 90s in this format! Debutant Umran Malik was the pick of Indian bowlers with figures of 2-66 from his 10 overs. Arshdeep Singh also made his ODI debut in this match but couldn't make any impact with the ball.
