IPL 2020, Match 23, Kolkata Knight Riders vs Kings XI Punjab -
Kolkata Knight Riders won by 2 runs
Saturday, Oct 10, 2020, Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi
Needing
6 runs off the final delivery of the 20th over (bowled by Sunil Narine) to push the game into Super Over, Punjab's Glenn
Maxwell's sky-hit landed just inches before the boundary rope to
agonizingly lose the game by just a margin of 2 runs! However, the defeat
would come down to the poor tactics by the KXIP management who sent Prabhsimran
Singh (4 runs off 7 deliveries) ahead of Maxwell when 21 runs needed from last 16
deliveries!

Having
opted to bat first, Knight Riders rode on the half-centuries from opener Shubman
Gill (57 off 47) and captain Dinesh Karthik (58 off 29). Gill consumed too many
deliveries at the start and could only score at an increased rate towards the fag
end of his innings! Meanwhile, DK set up the total nicely with a 22-ball half-century!
His 22-ball half-century in this innings is the fourth fastest by any player in
the ongoing IPL 2020 season! Overall, KKR managed to get to 164/6 in 20 overs.
During
the chase, Kings XI Punjab had all things under control until sending
Prabhsimran Singh in the 18th over! Up until then, they had a
115-run opening partnership with half-centuries each from Mayank Agarwal (56
off 39) and KL Rahul, a little cameo from Nicholas Pooran (16 off 10) and moreover
a well-set KL Rahul (74 off 58) at the crease.
(Equation:
21 runs needed from 16 balls) Prabhsimran played three consecutive dots after
walking out to bat in the 18th over and taken a single off the final
delivery to make matters worse for Punjab. Overall, he scored just 4 runs off 7
deliveries making the equation relatively complex (Equation: 16 runs needed from
8 deliveries) when he departed. Then, it all came down to 7 runs needed from
last delivery and Maxwell’s powerful hit landed just inches before the boundary
rope to hand Knight Riders a 2-run victory!
Among
KKR bowlers, Prasidh Krishna bagged three wickets in his 4 overs while Sunil
Narine bagged the other two wickets to fall in KXIP’s innings. Knight Riders
captain Dinesh Karthik bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his crucial
half-century with the bat that helped them post a match-winning total!
Brief Scores: Kolkata Knight Riders – 164/6 in 20 overs (Dinesh Karthik – 58, Shubman Gill – 57, Arshdeep Singh – 1/25, Ravi Bishnoi – 1/25) defeated Kings XI Punjab – 162/5 in 20 overs (KL Rahul – 74, Mayank Agarwal – 56, Prasidh Krishna – 3/29, Sunil Narine – 2/28) by a margin of 2 runs
