Just when the game was slipping away from KXIP's hands after an early advantage, KL Rahul brought Chris Jordan into attack in the 9th over. Due to his tight bowling, KKR lost Morgan (40 off 25) and Sunil Narine (6 off 4) in the space of 8 deliveries. Under pressure Gill starred with the bat scoring a half-century (57 off 45 deliveries with 3 fours and 4 sixes). An unbeaten cameo from Lockie Ferguson (24* off 13) during the death overs helped KKR to finish with a respectable 149/9 in 20 overs.
During the chase, Kings XI lost their captain KL Rahul with 47 runs on the board. Then it was all about the 100-run partnership for the second wicket between Mandeep Singh (66* off 56) and Chris Gayle (51 off 29). Both scored fifties each and Gayle departed just with 3 runs needed for victory. Mandeep along with Nicholas Pooran (2* off 3) were then able to finish the game without losing any further wickets in the 18th over guiding KXIP to a much-needed fifth consecutive victory this season.
The Universe Boss Chris Gayle has been adjudged as the 'Player of the Match' for his quick-fire half-century (51 runs off 29 deliveries) with the bat. His innings included 2 fours and 5 sixes! With this victory, KXIP moved up one position to No. 4 while Knight Riders moved down one position to No. 5 in the IPL 2020 points table.
