The much awaited Border Gavaskar Trophy is here with the first Test of the 4-match series at the Adelaide Oval. Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat first. India were eyeing for a 400+ total in their innings until the horrendous mix-up between Indian captain and vice-captain in the third session of the day. And that helped home team to make late inroads and take honors on the first day of this first Test match.
Day 1, Session 1:
Pacer Mitchell Starc got the home team off to a brilliant start as he dismissed Indian opener Prithvi Shaw for a 2-ball Duck in the very first over of the match. Another opener Mayank Agarwal paired up with Cheteshwar Pujara as the duo added 32 runs for the second wicket before the departure of Mayank. Pat Cummins bowled a great in-swinging delivery that cleaned up the Indian opener. With two wickets and slow batting, India only managed to score 42 runs in the first session.
Day 1, Session 2:
Another snail-paced session where India scored only 65 runs losing the wicket of Pujara (43 off 160 balls). A 68-run stand between Pujara and Virat Kohli was broken by Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon who had Pujara caught at leg slip. On a lighter note, Kohli got a reprieve on 16 when both the umpire and the Australian players failed to notice a nick on his glove which was caught by Aussie captain Tim Paine! Paine and Wade (at silly point) had a long chat before not going for the review which gave Kohli and India a second chance!
Day 1, Session 3:
Good session for both the teams this was! India scored 126 runs while Australia picked up 3 wickets including Virat Kohli. It all started with the wicket of Kohli – a horrible mix-up between Kohli and Rahane helped Aussies to see the back of Indian captain! Before Kohli’s departure, the duo added 88 runs for the fourth wicket that gave a much needed momentum for the slow moving scorecard. Australia managed to pick up two more wickets (Ajinkya Rahane – 42 & Hanuma Vihari – 16) with the second new ball to finish the Day 1 of this first Test match on a high!
Indian wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha (9*) and Ravichandran Ashwin (15*) were at the crease at stumps on Day 1. The duo had already added 27* runs for the 7th wicket and this stand was very crucial for India to get to a 350+ total.
Brief Scores: India – 233/6 (Virat Kohli – 74, Cheteshwar Pujara – 43, Mitchell Starc – 2/49, Pat Cummins – 1/42) at stumps on Day 1
