Dananjaya de Silva ruled out of South Africa series

In what comes as a bad news for the touring side, Sri Lankan all-rounder Dananjaya de Silva has been ruled out of the ongoing tour of South Africa owing to a hamstring injury. He was injured on first day of the Boxing Day Test in Centurion and had to go off the field on 79 as retired hurt.

According to ESPN Cricinfo: “Dananjaya de Silva can hardly stand on it at the moment, so he won’t be taking the field. Maybe if Sri Lanka are in a desperate situation they might consider sending him to bat, but he can’t even walk to the wicket.”

Before going out as retired hurt, Dananjaya was involved in a 131-run partnership for the fourth wicket after Sri Lanka lost their first three wickets for just 54 runs on the board. The stand set the tone for Sri Lanka’s batting in the first innings and helped them get to 396 in their first innings, their highest total in a Test innings in South Africa.

With this injury, Dananjaya cannot bat in Sri Lanka’s second innings while he will also miss the second and final Test match of the series as well. Sri Lanka’s next assignment will be a 2-match Test series against England at home starting from January 14 next year. Sri Lanka would be eager to have him fully fit and be ready for the series.
