Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss for the first time in the series and opted to bat first. However, things did not change for India as wickets fell around Virat (63 off 78) who scored his second consecutive half-century in this series. During this knock, Kohli completed 12,000 runs in ODI cricket becoming the sixth player thus far to get to the milestone. Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene were the others prior to Kohli to make this feat in ODI cricket.
Just when things are going from bad to worse, the two all-rounders Hardik Pandya (92* off 76) and Ravindra Jadeja (66* off 50) put on an unbeaten 150*-run stand for the sixth wicket to help India finish with a total of 302/5 in 50 overs. Among Aussie bowlers, Ashton Agar bagged two wickets while Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott bagged a wicket each.
During the chase, debutant Natarajan dismissed Labuschagne (7 off 13) in the sixth over to bag his maiden wicket for India at the international level. Steven Smith (7 off 15) who scored back-to-back 62-ball centuries in the first two ODIs too failed with the bat. Captain Aaron Finch shouldered the responsibility as he scored 75 runs off 82 deliveries with 7 fours and 3 sixes. With the wicket of Finch in the 26th over, India got back into the game as it all depended on Glenn Maxwell to take Australia home for a victory.
Maxwell once again proved his worth with the bat scoring 59 runs off 38 deliveries. But with his wicket in the 45th over changed the momentum of the game towards India. With Australia losing next two wickets (8th and 9th) in two successive deliveries put an end to any of the remaining Australia hopes of making it a whitewash in the ODI series! In the end, India won the game by a margin of 13 runs. India won the third ODI while Australia won the 3-match series by a margin of 2-1.
Brief Scores: India - 302/5 in 50 overs (Hardik Pandya - 92*, Ravindra Jadeja - 66*, Ashton Agar - 2/44, Adam Zampa - 1/45) defeated Australia - 289 all out in 49.3 overs (Aaron Finch - 75, Glenn Maxwell - 59, Shardul Thakur - 3/51, Jasprit Bumrah - 2/44) by a margin of 13 runs
