Mahendra Singh Dhoni was considered the best among the wicket-keepers in the current generation at the international level. But is he at his best in the IPL tournament as well?! Who has the best numbers among wicket-keepers in the IPL tournament? Let us discuss the top 3 players who done their best so far behind the stumps in the concluded 13 seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
#3 Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa has effected 90 dismissals in his 114 innings as wicket-keeper in this tournament. Out of his 90 dismissals, 58 are catches and the other 32 are stumpings. Uthappa’s 32 stumpings were the second-most by a wicket-keeper in the IPL tournament after Dhoni’s 39 such dismissals! Uthappa was sold to Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2021 season. And with MSD on the side, Uthappa might not get a chance to keep wickets in the upcoming 14th edition of the IPL tournament.
#2 Dinesh Karthik
With 196 IPL games, Dinesh Karthik is the third-most capped player in the IPL tournament after Mahendra Singh Dhoni (204) and Rohit Sharma (200). The 110 catches taken by Dinesh Karthik are the most by a wicket-keeper in the history of the IPL tournament. With 30 more stumpings, Karthik currently has 140 dismissals against his name as wicket-keeper in the IPL tournament.
In the 196 games, Karthik has represented as many as 6 teams (DD, GL, MI, RCB, KXIP & KKR) in his 13-year IPL career. He is currently with KKR and had stepped down from captaincy during the mid of the IPL 2020 season to concentrate more on his batting and wicket-keeping skills. No wonder he would put up a great fight behind the stumps to match the great MS Dhoni.
#1 MS Dhoni
There is no match for Mahendra Singh Dhoni if it comes to wicket-keeping in any format of the game. His always-thinking mind from behind the stumps is an asset to the bowlers be it International cricket or domestic cricket. Even a non-cricket fan would admire Dhoni’s quick stumpings. Matching his talent, MS Dhoni too affected 148 dismissals in the IPL tournament, the most by any wicket-keeper in the history of the tournament.
Out of these dismissals, 109 are catches while 39 are the stumpings. His 39 stumpings are the most by any wicket-keeper in the history of this tournament. This stat would speak of Dhoni’s greatness behind the stumps. Dhoni has represented Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiants in his IPL career. He played a crucial role in leading CSK to three IPL titles – 2010, 2011 & 2018.
