Rain washed out the third and final WT20I on Thursday (Apr 01) in the 3-match Women’s T20I series to have a final say in what was expected to be a thriller! Australia Women won the first match of the series while home team New Zealand won the second match to level the series. But the last match was washed out to end the series in a Draw! Let us relive how this 3-match series went.
WT20I #1: Australia Women defeated New Zealand Women by 6 wickets
New Zealand Women, after being sent into bat first, posted a par total on the board. Courtesy of Amy Sattherthwaite’s 40-run knock, New Zealand finished with 130/6 in 20 overs. Jess Jonassen was the pick of Australia’s bowlers with 3 wickets in his 4 overs. In reply, Australia lost 3 early wickets with just 14 runs on the board. Ashleigh Gardener’s unbeaten 73* guided them to a 6-wicket victory with 2 overs to spare in their innings. Gardener also bagged Player of the Match for her match-winning knock.
WT20I #2: New Zealand Women defeated Australia Women by 4 wickets
In a bid to level the series, home team New Zealand won the toss and opted to bowl first. Australia who were good with the bat in the first match posted just a par total in this match! Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 54-ball 61 helped them get to 129/4 in 20 overs. New Zealand took the chase all down to the final delivery and eventually won it by 4 wickets. NZ opener Frances MacKay scored 46 runs and shared a 57-run stand for the third wicket. This knock also helped her bag the Player of the Match award.
WT20I #3: Match abandoned due to rain
With series level 1-1, it was all down to the third and final WT20I. Both teams were eager to win the match and win the series. However, rain had other plans! The third and final match was washed away by rain and only 2.5 overs were possible in the match before rain stopped play. Australia Women lost their opener, Beth Mooney, for 4 runs while they scored 14/1 in the 2.5 overs before rain made an entrance!
What’s next for these two teams?
The three-match WT20I series between New Zealand Women and Australia Women is now done and dusted. Both these teams will meet in a 3-match ODI series which will kick start on Sunday (Apr 04). The second and third ODIs will be played on Wednesday (Apr 07) and Saturday (Apr 10). All three matches in this series are scheduled to be played at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
