Chennai Super Kings (CSK) courtesy an all-round show by Ravindra Jadeja crushed Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the first game on Sunday (Apr 25) to go to the top of the IPL 2021 points table. At this stage of the tournament, both CSK and RCB played 5 games each winning four and losing a game. For the record, this is RCB’s first defeat in this season having won all their previous four games in the tournament.
CSK got off to a good start after choosing to bat first. Their openers Faf du Plessis (50 off 41) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (33 off 25) added 74 runs for the first wicket. However, RCB pegged back CSK with regular strikes during the middle overs. They were 142/4 at the 17.3 over mark. Jadeja then showed his batting prowess as he hit five sixes off the final over bowled by Harshal Patel. A total of 37 runs were scored in the final over as CSK finished their innings on 191/4 in 20 overs.
Ravindra Jadeja was dropped on 0 by Daniel Christian near the boundary rope but, in the end, he made them pay with an unbeaten 62* runs off 28 deliveries with 4 fours and 5 sixes. Harshal Patel picked up 3 wickets in his 3 overs conceding just 14 runs but his final-over disaster in which Jadeja had hit him for 5 sixes and 37 runs spoiled his bowling figures. Apart from Harshal in the RCB bowling line-up, Chahal with a wicket was the other wicket-taker.
Chasing a massive target, RCB were off to a great start with with Devdutt Padikkal scoring at a good rate. They added 44 runs in the first 3 overs before losing Virat in the first ball of the fourth over. And with that wicket, RCB imploded to gift CSK the match! Jadeja excelled in the middle overs with the ball picking up 3 wickets in his 4 overs and his spell had RCB reeling at 83/6 in 10.1 overs. In the end, RCB managed to get to 122/9 in 20 overs conceding CSK a 69-run victory.
Ravindra Jadeja has been adjudged as the Player of the Match for his all-round effort in this match. With this victory, Chennai Super Kings moved to the top of the points table with 8 points. However, RCB were pushed down to second position in the IPL 2021 points table. Even though both CSK and RCB have 8 points each, CSK edged RCB with a better run-rate!
