MI register 2nd victory as SRH choke again

Defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) thumped Sun Risers Hyderabad (SRH) in a low-scoring game in Chennai on Saturday (Apr 17) to register their second victory in three games thus far in the IPL 2021 season. After losing season opener to Royal Challengers Bangalore, MI have thus far registered two back-to-back victories. On the other hand, Sun Risers Hyderabad lost all their 3 games to see themselves at the bottom of the points table. This is also the first time for SRH to lose all their first 3 games of an IPL season.

Having opted to bat first, Mumbai Indians made a steady start to their innings. Both openers contributed with the bat adding 55 runs for the first wicket. Though Quinton de Kock struggled to get quick runs, he was MI’s top scorer with 40 runs off 39 deliveries while the other opener Rohit Sharma (32 off 25) lost his wicket trying to up the scoring rate. Kieron Pollard applied the finishing touches at the end remaining unbeaten on 35* off just 22 deliveries. His innings involved a four and 3 sixes. With all these contributions, MI finished their innings with 150/5 on the board in 20 overs.

Vijay Shankar was the pick of SRH bowlers with 2 wickets conceding just 19 runs from his 3 overs. He could have had his third wicket as well had Rashid Khan held on to a diving catch in Shankar’s 3rd over. Mujeeb Ur Rahman with 2 wickets and Khaleel Ahmed with a wicket were the other wicket-takers for SRH in this match.

Chasing a modest target, SRH made a good start with Jonny Bairstow blazing all his guns. He scored a quick-fire 43 off just 22 deliveries with 3 fours and 4 sixes before getting dismissed as hit-wicket in the 8th over. However, MI bowlers broke the back of SRH’s chase with regular wickets. After a superb start, SRH dipped from 67/0 to 90/3. And they they kept losing wickets with each over progressing. If not for Shankar’s 25-ball 28, SRH’s score would’ve been much worse. Overall, SRH were bowled out for just 137 conceding a 13-run victory to MI.

Among Mumbai Indians’ bowlers Rahul Chahar and Trent Boult bagged 3 wickets each while Jasprit Bumrah and Krunal Pandya accounted for a wicket each. MI all-rounder Kieron Pollard has been named as the Player of the Match for his little cameo (35* off 22) with the bat on a slow pitch where everyone else struggled.

Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians – 150/5 in 20 overs (Quinton de Kock – 40, Vijay Shankar – 2/19) defeated Sun Risers Hyderabad – 137 all out in 19.4 overs (Jonny Bairstow – 43, Rahul Chahar – 3/19) by a margin of 13 runs
