India retains no. 1 Test rank after ICC annual update

Team India retained their no. 1 position in the ICC Test Team Rankings following an annual update on Thursday (May 13). This update eliminates the results from the year 2017-18. The points earned by teams from May 2020 will be considered at 100 percent while the results from the previous two years (May 2018 to April 2020) will be considered at 50 percent for this latest annual update.

India gained a point to move to 121 points while New Zealand with 120 points consolidated their second position having gained 2 points. Zimbabwe has been the biggest gainer in this update with 8 points, while the South African team has lost 9 points. Though Zimbabwe remained at the last position (No. 10), they decreased the gap between them and the 9th ranked Bangladesh (46 points). Meanwhile, South Africa dropped to 7th position, their joint-lowest ranking in the table!

On the other hand, England leapfrogged their arch-rivals Australia by a point following this annual update. England who were previously with 106 points gained three points to move to 109 points, while Australia, who was previously on 113 points, lost 5 points to drop down to 108 points. On the other hand, West Indies moved from the eighth position to the sixth position with a series victory in Bangladesh and a drawn series against Sri Lanka at home. This is also West Indies’ best position in the table since 2013.

Following the annual update, Pakistan retained its fifth position in the table while Sri Lanka dropped from the seventh position to eighth in the table. In what will be the first Test series after this annual update, New Zealand will face England in a 2-match Test series starting from June 02 in England. The first Test match of the series will be played at Lord’s while the second Test will be played at Edgbaston.
