Young Indian opener Shafali Verma has been handed maiden call-up for the ODI and Test format as India announce a 21-member squad for the upcoming tour of England later this year. The three wicket-keepers Sushma Verma, Sweta Verma, and Nuzhat Parween who were part of earlier concluded T20I series against South Africa Women at home have all been left out from the squad.
After a good home T20I series against South Africa, her inclusion in the ODI and Test formats will be a big boost for young Shafali. Meanwhile, Indrani Roy was another uncapped player in this squad as she received her maiden international call-up. And this tour would be a great learning experience for her!
Shikha Pandey and Taniya Bhatia who were earlier left out from the South Africa series have also returned to the national colors with this announcement. Meanwhile, Rajeshwari Gayakwad was left out of the series who is currently rehabilitating from a knee injury. On a lighter note, Gayakwad is also recovering the COVID and has been making good progress according to ESPN Cricinfo.
England Women will host Indian Women for a one-off Test match starting from 16th of June later this year. A total of 3 ODI matches and same number of T20I matches will be played following this one-off Test. As per the current itinerary, the tour will proceed till 15th of July. All these dates and fixtures are subject to change if the COVID pandemic worsens!
