WT20 2021: PNG eliminated; Bangladesh stay afloat

Match #5: Scotland defeated PNG by 17 runs

Having opted to bat first, Scotland lost their first two wickets for just 26 runs on the board. A 92-run stand for the third wicket between Richie Berrington (70 off 49) and Matthew Cross (45 off 36) helped them get to a good start! The stand was finally broken with the wicket of Cross in the 15th over and Scotland looked unstoppable during that stand ad they were aiming to get to a total close to 190.

However, Papua New Guinea bowlers pulled back things with 6 wickets in the last 2 overs! Looking at this stat much deeper, Scotland lost 4 wickets alone in the last 5 deliveries they faced! Eventually, Scotland got to 165/9 in 20 overs. During the chase, none of the PNG batters spend quality time at the crease and as a result, they lost the match by a margin of 17 runs.

PNG middle-order batter Norman Vanua was their lone performer with the bat - 47 runs off 37 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes! Scotland's Josh Davey has been brilliant with the ball having conceded just 18 runs from his 3.3 overs while picking up 4 wickets! Scotland's Richie Berrington  (70 off 49 with 6 fours and 3 sixes) has been named as the Player of the Match for his superb knock with the bat!

Brief Scores: Scotland - 165/9 in 20 overs (Richie Berrington - 70, Kabua Morea - 4/31) defeated Papua New Guinea - 148 all out in 19.3 overs (Norman Vanua - 47, Josh Davey - 4/18) by a margin of 17 runs

Match #6: Bangladesh defeated Oman by a margin of 26 runs

Having opted to bat first, Bangladesh were off to an awful start losing their first two wickets for just 21 runs. Opener Mohammad Naim (64 off 50) and Shakib al Hasan (42 off 29) added 80 runs for the third wicket to get them on track keeping up the scoring rate after two early blows! On a lighter note, Naim was dropped thrice in his half-century score!

Once the stand was broken, Mahmudullah (17 off 10) and Mushfiqur (6 off 4) tried to get them to a huge target but they too fell cheaply. With some good death bowling from Oman, they restricted Bangladesh to just 153 all out in 20 overs! Bilal Khan (3/18) and Fayyaz Butt (3/30) were Oman's top-performers with the ball in this innings!

During the chase, Oman opener Aqib Ilyas (6 off 6) fell cheaply. However, Jatinder Singh (40 off 33), Kashyap Prajapati (21 off 18), Zeeshan Maqsood (12 off 16) kept Oman alive for the most part of the chase. Once Bangladesh managed to dismiss these three batters, Oman do not have the depth in their batting line-up to chase down this target! Eventually, Bangladesh won the match by 26 runs to stay alive in the tournament.

Mustafizur Rahman (4/36) and Shakib al Hasan (3/28) were the top performers with the ball for Bangladesh! Shakib was adjudged as Player of the Match for his all-around contribution - 42 off 29 with the bat and 3/28 with the ball. On a lighter note, Mustafizur bowled a 11-ball over and Mahmudullah dropped Jatinder early in the innings. These two complicated Bangladesh's chances of winning this match but they eventually got over the line quite comfortably!

Brief Scores: Bangladesh - 153 all out in 20 overs (Mohammad Naim - 64, Bilal Khan - 3/18) defeated Oman - 127/9 in 20 overs (Jatinder Singh - 40, Mustafizur Rahman - 4/36) by a margin of 26 runs
