Visitors have nothing to boast about in this Test apart from the 162-run partnership between Dawid Malan and Joe Root on day three of the Test match! Their selection process had once again come under the hammer after they decided to drop both James Anderson and Stuart Broad for this crucial Ashes opener!
Having opted to bat first, England did nothing good to them as they were bowled out for just 147 runs in the first innings! Australia then went on to post a mammoth total of 425 runs on the board, taking a lead of 278 runs in the first innings. The home team in the first innings was hugely propelled by the knocks from Travis Head (152), David Warner (94), Marnus Labuschagne (74).
Head alone scored 112 runs during the third session on day two and that alone hand Australia a commanding position in this Test match! England's inexperienced spinner Jack Leach was at the receiving end having conceded 102 runs just from his 13 overs in Aussies' first innings!
When England were heading towards an innings defeat, Root joined forces with Malan on day three to bail them out of trouble. However, Australia made a strong comeback in the morning session on day four to bowl out England for just 297 runs in their second innings.
England did only manage to set a target of 20 runs for Australia who chased it down losing one wicket. David Warner sustained a rib injury in the first innings and did not come out to bat in the 2nd innings. Alex Carey along with Marcus Harris opened the innings. Though England's Ollie Robinson dismissed Alex Carey for 9 runs, Australia were able to chase down the target with 9 wickets in hand!
Nathan Lyon with the wicket of Dawid Malan became the 17th player overall to bag 400 wickets in Test cricket, third Aussie after Shane Warne (708) and Glenn McGrath (563) to make this feat! With his 4-fer, Lyon took his overall wickets tally to 403.
Travis Head who had a brilliant outing with the bat in Australia's first innings has been adjudged as the Player of the Match at Gabba. The second Test match will be played at the Adelaide Oval beginning from Thursday (Dec 16).
Brief Scores: Australia - 425 all out (Travis Head - 152, Ollie Robinson - 3/58) & 20/1 (Marcus Harris - 9*, Ollie Robinson - 1/13) defeated England - 147 all out (Jos Buttler - 39, Pat Cummins - 5/38) & 297 all out (Joe Root - 89, Nathan Lyon - 4/91) by a margin of 9 wickets.
