Steven Smith, the current vice-captain of the Australian team, has been promoted to lead the Australian side at Adelaide in the absence of Cummins. On the other hand, Travis Head who had a stellar game with the bat at Gabba has been named as vice-captain of the side.

With this recent development, Australia will be without two of their best bowlers for this Test match. Josh Hazlewood who sustained a mild side strain at Gabba was earlier ruled out of the second Test match! This development has been a blessing in disguise for the young pacers in the squad!

On Wednesday (Dec 15), Australia announced their playing XI for Adelaide. They had included Jhye Richardson in place of injured Hazlewood. Now, Michael Neser comes in for Pat Cummins who will become the 462nd player to represent Australia in this format of the game! Neser will be Australia's 2nd debutant in this series so far after Alex Carey made his debut at Gabba!

Australia's (updated) playing XI for Adelaide: David Warner, Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith (c), Travis Head (vc), Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, Jhye Richardson, Nathan Lyon, Michael Neser
