Toss Update: India won the toss and opted to field first. The toss and start of the play were delayed due to rain and a wet outfield. Eventually, the game started with around 2 hours delay and was reduced to 40 overs per innings due to the time lost. Powerplay was reduced to 8 overs with each bowler can bowl a maximum of 8 overs in this match.

After being sent into bat first, South Africa scored 249 on the board losing 4 wickets in 40 overs. Quinton de Kock provided them a decent start with his 48 runs off 54 deliveries while David Miller (75* off 63) and Heinrich Klassen (74* off 65) stitched an unbeaten 139* run stand for the fifth wicket to help finish with a competitive total on the board in 40 overs.

Shardul Thakur (2-35) and Kuldeep Yadav (1-39) bowled economically for the Indians while Ravi Bishnoi (1-69), Avesh Khan (0-51), and Mohammad Siraj (0-49) conceded too many runs. Each of these bowlers bowled 8 overs each in this innings as there is no 6th bowling option available for India!

India, chasing 250 runs to win, managed to score 240 losing 8 wickets in 40 overs. At 4-51, India's scorecard looked very scary and Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson picked up the mantle to get them close to the target! In this process, both batters scored the fifties. While Shreyas departed just after scoring his fifty, Sanju remained unbeaten on 86* in this narrow 9-run defeat.

Shardul Thakur also made a valuable contribution with the bat scoring 33 runs off 31 deliveries and was part of the 93-run stand for the 6th wicket along with Samson!
