Sri Lanka hopes to maintain their recent success in one-day internationals after defeating Australia in a five-match series by a score of 3-2 in June earlier this year. Afghanistan has proven that it can compete in ODIs as well. It would be intriguing to observe how the batsmen from Afghanistan do against the spin-friendly wickets from Sri Lanka. In the next ODI Series, the squad will be looking to ruin Sri Lanka's fun at home.
Sri Lanka have 62 points after 18 games and is ranked number 10 out of 13 in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League table. To qualify for World Cup 2023, the island country must place itself in the top 8. Sri Lanka would've been aware that they cannot in any way take Afghanistan lightly. To have a chance of finishing in the top 8, Sri Lanka must win this 3-match ODI series at home.
Afghanistan, on the other side, is positioned seventh with 100 points after 12 games. Afghanistan is now in a good position. Given Sri Lanka's recent dominance in the ODI format, Afghanistan's odds of winning an ODI series might not seem good. They finally defeated Australia in Sri Lanka after thirty years, and it was a big deal.
This is going to be the first time these two teams are going to meet in an ODI bilateral series and things look very interesting ahead. So far, these two nations played have played only 4 ODIs against each other of which Sri Lanka won 3 matches. Afghanistan's only ODI victory against Sri Lanka came in 2018 in Abu Dhabi.
