Though his last international appearance came in 2017, Mishra remained a familiar face in domestic competitions and the Indian Premier League (IPL). His most recent outing was with Lucknow Super Giants in the 2024 season, where his experience continued to be an asset to his side.
Mishra represented India in 22 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is, finishing with 156 international wickets. He made an immediate impact on debut in 2008, grabbing a five-wicket haul against Australia in Mohali, a performance that signaled his potential as a reliable spin option for India.
It was, however, in the IPL that Mishra truly carved his niche. With 174 wickets in 162 matches, he remains among the league’s all-time highest wicket-takers. He also owns a unique record, becoming the only bowler to claim three IPL hat-tricks, achieved with Delhi Daredevils in 2008, Deccan Chargers in 2011, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013. His guile, variations, and calmness under pressure made him a prized asset across multiple franchises.
Reflecting on his decision, Mishra cited recurring injuries and a desire to make way for younger talent. His career, defined by longevity and skill, leaves Indian cricket and IPL fans with fond memories and a benchmark for future spinners to emulate.
"Today, after 25 years, I announce my retirement from cricket, a game that has been my first love, my teacher, and my greatest source of joy. This journey has been filled with countless emotions, moments of pride, hardship, learning, and love. I am deeply grateful to the BCCI, Haryana Cricket Association, my coaches, support staff, colleagues, and most importantly, the fans, whose faith and support gave me strength at every step."
