Hosts Sri Lanka defeated West Indies by 1 wicket in the first ODI of the three-match series on Saturday (Feb 22) at Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo to take 1-0 lead in the series. Sri Lanka bowler Wanindu Hasaranga scored an unbeaten 39-ball 42 to help Sri Lanka snatch this victory from the jaws of a certain defeat!
After being sent in to bat first, West Indies managed to score 289 for 7 in 50 overs - strongly aided by a century from opener Shai Hope (115 off 140). Keemo Paul (32* off 17) too provided much needed support with the bat towards the end of their innings. In reply, Sri Lanka though struggled at one stage managed to chase down the target with a wicket in hand and 5 balls to spare. Both their openers Avishka Fernando (50 off 55) and Dimuth Karunaratne (52 off 57) scored half-centuries each.
Wanindu Hasaranga has been adjudged as the 'Player of the Match' for his brilliant effort with the bat in this victory. The second ODI of this series is scheduled to be played at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota on Wednesday with play starting at 02:30 pm IST.
