India Women defeated Australia Women by a margin of 17 runs in the tournament opener on Friday (Feb 21) to make a grand start to the prestigious Women's World T20 2020 tournament. It was a massive upset at the Sydney Showground Stadium in Sydney as Australia being hosts were the favorites to win this game!
After being sent in to bat first, India crawled their way to a total of 132 for 7 in 20 overs. Middle-order batter Deepti Sharma with an unbeaten 46-ball 49 helped India get to this total. In reply, Australia failed to climb this small target and went on to lose the game by 17 runs in the end. Alyssa Healy (51 off 35) and Ashleigh Gardner (34 off 36) are the only Aussie batters to get to double digits in this defeat!
Poonam Yadav has been adjudged as the 'Player of the Match' for her bowling figures of 4 for 19 in 4 overs. India will play their next game against Bangladesh on Monday (Feb 24) while hosts Australia has also their next game against Sri Lanka on the same day!
