IPL 2020, Match 5, Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians - Mumbai Indians won by 49 runs
Wednesday, Sep 23, 2020, Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi
Mumbai Indians (MI) made a strong comeback in the ongoing IPL 2020 season with a thumping victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). This big vicotry comes as a huge relief for the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai team after their morale-loosing defeat to Chennai Super Kings in the season opener at the same venue!
After being sent into bat first, Mumbai Indians lost opener Quinton de Kock (1 off 3) very cheaply. Captain Rohit Sharma (80 off 54) along with Suryakumar Yadav (47 off 28) then made a strong statement with the bat adding 90 runs for the second wicket. Rohit had hit 6 sixes in this innings which helped MI get to a commanding total. In the process, Rohit became fourth player to hit 200 sixes in the IPL tournament!

Mumbai's middle-order contributed with a good strike-rate towards the death overs which helped them finish with a mammoth total of 195 for 5 in their 20 overs. Shivam Mavi (2/32) was the pick of KKR bowlers while Pat Cummins who was very expensive (0/49 in 3 overs) did not even bowl his full quota of 4 overs.
Chasing 196 for victory, Kolkata Knight Riders never seemed to be in the chase at any stage of the innings! A failed opening partnership between Shubman Gill and Sunil Narine prompted captain Dinesh Karthik (30 off 23) to bat higher up the order at No. 3. But the move backfired, as KKR's middle-order put on a flop show with the bat following DK's dismissal!
Notable contribution with the bat had come from Pat Cummins (at No. 8 position) who scored a quick-fire 33 off just 12 deliveries but KKR were already dug deep by then and there was no chance from that situation to win! Mumbai's Jasprit Bumrah bowled his first three overs superbly conceding just 5 runs and picking up the wickets of Morgan and Russell. But Cummins thrashed Bumrah in his last over for 27 runs (6 0 6 2 6 wd 6) to spoil his bowling figures.
Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma had been adjudged as the 'Player of the Match' for his crucial knock with the bat. He scored 80 runs off 54 deliveries with included three fours and six sixes.
Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians - 195/5 in 20 overs (Rohit Sharma - 80, Suryakumar Yadav - 47, Shivam Mavi - 2/32, Andre Russell - 1/17) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders - 146/9 in 20 overs (Pat Cummins - 33, Dinesh Karthik - 30, James Pattinson - 2/25, Rahul Chahar - 2/26) by a margin of 49 runs
