Having opted to bat first, RCB failed to score at a good rate at any stage of their innings. Opener Aaron Finch departed for 15 runs off 11 deliveries. Devdutt Padikkal scored 22 off 21 balls before losing his wicket in the 7th over. Kohli (50 off 43) and AB (39 off 36) added 82 runs for the third wicket but that stand has come in 68 deliveries which does not add any momentum at all for the scoring rate during the middle overs!

Kohli got to his fifty at a strike rate of around 116 but with no cameos towards the end of their innings meant that RCB only got to 145/6 in 20 overs. This was not at all a daunting total by any means but the game being played during day time and with CSK under pressure this season, RCB believed they got just enough on the board. Among CSK bowlers, Sam Curran bagged 3 wickets while Deepak Chahar bagged 2 wickets and Mitchell Santner picked up a wicket.

During the chase, CSK got off to a flier with their openers - Faf du Plessis (25 off 13) and Ruturaj Gaikwad - adding 46 runs for the first wicket. After the departure of Faf in the sixth over, Rayudu shared a 67-run partnership for the second wicket along with opener Gaikwad and CSK pocketed this game with this crucial second-wicket partnership. Dhoni (19* off 21) walked out at No. 4 after Rayudu's departure and the duo steered CSK home with 8 wickets in hand and 8 balls to spare in their innings.

In the process of guiding CSK to this morale-boosting 8-wicket victory, Gaikwad got to his maiden half-century in IPL. He finished with figures of unbeaten 65* off 51 deliveries which included 4 fours and 3 sixes. This knock also helped him bag 'Player of the Match' award. With this result, CSK moved one place up to seventh place with 8 points while RCB remained at third place with 14 points.
