In a dramatic turnaround of events, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) were eliminated from the IPL 2020 season with their defeat to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in what was the last league game for both these teams this season. Going into this game, CSK had no chance of making it to the playoffs but KXIP had the chance if they beat CSK in this match!

After being sent into bat first, KXIP had a brilliant start with openers Mayank Agarwal (26 off 15) and KL Rahul (29 off 27) adding 48 runs for the first wicket inside the powerplay. All of a sudden, KXIP found themselves in a spot of bother with the departure of Nicholas Pooran (2 off 6) and Chris Gayle (12 off 19) - KXIP slipped from 48/0 in 5.1 overs to 72/4 in 11.5 overs. And with the dismissals of Mandeep Singh (14 off 15) and James Neesham (2 off 3) only turned things bad to ugly for the Kings XI.
KXIP were reduced to 113/6 in 17.1 overs and were staring at a much bigger defeat in this must-win game! Then their middle-order batsman Deepak Hooda helped Punjab make a comeback with a brilliant half-century. Punjab managed to score 16, 10 and 14 runs in the final 3 overs, courtesy Hooda's hitting, to finish with a respectable total of 153/6 in 20 overs. Hooda remained unbeaten on 62* runs off 30 deliveries which included 3 fours and 4 sixes.
During the chase, a confident Chennai Super Kings did not give any chance to the Punjab line-up right from the first over! Faf du Plessis scored 48 runs off 34 deliveries with 4 fours and 2 sixes and he is the only wicket to fall in CSK's innings as they chased down the target in 18.5 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad (62* off 49) scored his third consecutive half-century as Ambati Rayudu scored run-a-ball 30* in this morale-boosting victory.
Gaikwad bagged the 'Player of the Match' for his performance with the bat. CSK won all their final three games and coincidentally Gaikwad was the 'Player of the Match' award! Overall, both CSK and KXIP had identical stats in the IPL 2020 season - In the 14 games played, both teams won 6 games and lost 8 games to finish with 12 points.
Brief Scores: Chennai Super Kings - 154/1 in 18.5 overs (Ruturaj Gaikwad - 62*, Faf du Plessis - 48, Chris Jordan - 1/31) defeated Kings XI Punjab - 153/6 in 20 overs (Deepak Hooda - 62*, KL Rahul - 29, Lungi Ngidi - 3/39, Ravindra Jadeja - 1/17) by a margin of 9 wickets
