Young opener Priyank Panchal has been named as his replacement for the series. Even though Priyank might not get a place in the playing XI, it would be a great opportunity for the youngster to prove his worth overseas if need arises.
"Team India Test vice-captain Rohit Sharma sustained a left hamstring injury during his training session here in Mumbai yesterday. He has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match Test series against South Africa. Priyank Panchal will replace Rohit Sharma in the Test squad," stated BCCI in their media release.
Rohit Sharma was earlier named India's vice-captain for South Africa, taking the position from out-of-form Ajinkya Rahane. Even though BCCI has not officially picked a vice-captain yet, it would be interesting to see who gets to play that role in South Africa.
India are set to play a 3-match Test series in South Africa beginning on Boxing Day. The three Tests will be played at Centurion (Dec 26 - 30), Johannesburg (Jan 03 - 07) and Cape Town (Jan 11 - 15).
