England lost the first ODI of the 3-match series to South Africa at Chester-le-Street by a good margin of 62 runs after conceding 333 runs to the visitors in the first half of the game! Ben Stokes who had been made England's red-ball captain recently has decided to call it time in this ODI format of the game with this match!

Courtesy of two hundred-plus partnerships for the 2nd and 3rd wickets, South Africa got to a massive total of 333/5 from their 50 overs. Rassie van der Dussen (134 off 117 balls) starred with the bat scoring a century while Aiden Markram (77 off 61) and Janneman Malan (57 off 77) scored half-centuries each!
Liam Livingstone was the star bowler for the England team in this match! Even though he bowled just 4 overs, he got rid of the high-flying Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram. England would have been chasing even a higher total if not for these two wickets!
The home team started off well in the run-chase with a 102-run partnership between the openers and it all went awry after the first wicket fell! They were reduced to 142/3 from a strong position of 102/0! Joe Root at no. 3 played a crucial knock scoring 86 runs off 77 balls but couldn't build a good partnership.
Eventually, England were bowled out for 271 runs in 46.5 overs conceding a 62-run victory for South Africa. Keshav Maharaj was leading the visiting side as their regular captain Temba Bavuma was ruled out injured from this series. Maharaj opened the bowling for Proteas and returned bowling figures of 1/42 from his 10 overs.
Rassie van der Dussen bagged the Player of the Match for his crucial century in setting up the run-chase in this match! South Africa are currently leading the 3-match ODI series by 1-0. The second ODI match will be played in Manchester on Friday (Jul 22).
